Project Beneficiary

Hope For Living Philippines: Children in Crisis will be conducted in conjunction with the Kariton Klasrum (Pushcart Classroom) Project of the Department of Education of the Philippines (DepEd) and Mr. Efren Peñaflorida, 2009 CNN Hero of the Year, a Christian educator, and his group, the Dynamic Teen Company (DTC).

Purpose

The project aims to provide and equip Dynamic Teen Company and its volunteers with HFLP materials in conducting their outreach values education classes with the children at-risk living in the streets. The ultimate hope is to instill values to these children at-risk, thereby equipping them with the ability to discern what is right and wrong, especially in making decisions in life.

Materials

Japanese manga and anime are very popular among children in the Philippines. Under the HFLP Project, the Japanese art-form of manga is used to tell Biblical stories, to present values in an easy-to-understand mannger. The materials will focus on the story of Jesus, supported by a flip-book manga story book and study guides to reinforce lessons learned from the main text book, The Messiah.

Partnerships

The Department of Education (DepEd), aiming to reintegrate children at-risk into regular schools, is targeting to deploy 100 mobile classrooms in Metro Manila by working with CNN “Hero of the Year” Efren Peñaflorida Jr., who in turn proposes to use The Messiah Manga series in teaching values education classes, in addition to subjects such as English, Mathematics and Social Studies.

Ultimate Beneficiaries

As per the list provided by DepEd and DTC regarding the activity centers in the Greater Manila Area, the list of estimated children at risk in Metro Manila, plus those in Mindanao, would be about 8,000 children. NLM aims to provide materials to 52 activity centers in those areas to reach-out to those targeted children.
